JAMES ARNOLD - d. Gloucester, VA or South Carolina?. "Is said to have been born in England, came to the United States with his parents and settled in Virginia. Served in the Revolutionary War and was at the Battle of Yorktown when Cornwallis surrendered. Married in Virginia and moved to Spartanburg, SC where he raised a large family". (src. "Absalom Arnold - 1845 Tippah Co. Census

NOTE: Absalom Arnold was born in Virginia and married Cerina Athanot. They left Virginia and settled in the Spartanburg County, South Carolina area with brother, John Arnold (wife was Nancy Mitchum). Both are found in Spartanburg County in the late 1700's. Sometime after 1840, there was a great migration of Arnolds from South Carolina and this is when Absalom Arnold left South Carolina and moved to Mississippi."

John Arnold - b. abt. 1760 Gloucester, Virginia; d. November 23, 1813 Spartanburg Co., South Carolina. Married Nancy Exertrix MITCHUM (daughter of George Mitchum) before 1785 in Virginia. John and Nancy moved to Spartanburg Co., SC around 1803. About 1816, after John Arnold died, widowed Nancy and children moved to Madison Co., Alabama, bringing eight negroes and personal property. On June 30, 1818, Nancy married Thomas HASLIP, who lived in Franklin Co., TN. She moved there also. In the summer or fall of 1820, Nancy seperated from Thomas Haslip and returned to Madison Co., Alabama. Thomas Haslip died in Tennessee. John and Nancy Arnold lived in Madison Co., Alabama and then Henderson Co., Tennessee. (src. Chancery Record "B" Page 84 of Madison Couty, Alabama).

2. William Arnold - b. 1785 VA; d. August 15, 1830 Henderson Co., Tennessee. Married Nancy MEREDITH (daughter of Henry Meredith). Lived in South Carolina with his father but moved to Madison Co., Alabama by January 26, 1824 when he and his brother James filed in court for their father's estate. In 1825, William Arnold is living in Franklin Co., TN but moved to Henderson County, Tennessee afterwards. When William Arnold died, widowed Nancy Meredith Arnold moved to Texas with three of her sons (James Arnold, George Mitchum Arnold, and Henry Meredith Arnold) and one daughter (Parmelia) in 1851. She was born 1776 and died 1856. She is buried in the Ebenezer Cemetery, near Arp, Smith County, Texas. Was a slave owning planter. (src. "Texas and Texans", Vol. 3, pg. 1394; by Frank W. George Mitchum Arnold - b. April 15, 1824 South Carolina; d. August 2, 1911 Smith Co., TX. Married (1) Susan DOUGLAS and had eight children. Left Henderson Co., TN about 1851 and moved to Texas with his brothers Henry Meredith Arnold and James Arnold. Fought in the Civil War as a Confederate Private, under Captain Irvin Rucker's Company in Robertson Texas Regiment. He was involved in the Trans-Mississippi Department, taking part in the Mansfield Campaign, Pleasant Hill and Yellow Bayou. He left the service about 1865, never suffering either wound or capture by the enemy. Married (2) Jane ALEXANDER and had one child. Then married (3) Maggie CANTERBERRRY and had five more children. Is found on the 1860 Smith Co., Texas Census with wife #1. George M. Arnold is buried in the Ebenezer Cemetery, near Arp, Smith County, Texas. Was a Mason, being the Master of his Blue Lodge No. 98 in Canton. (src. "Texas and Texans", Vol. 3, pg. 1394; by Frank W. Johnson; American Historical Society, 1914)

John R. Arnold -b. September 18, 1854 Texas; Worked on family farm until he was 19 years old when he became a teacher for about eight years. Was president of a college in Overton. His effective work as an educator won him a dregee from Bowden College in Georgia and his last work in the field of education was in the public schools of Caladonia, Texas. Prepared himself for admission to the bar while a teacher and was licensed in 1884 by Judge Hagelwood. Married Eliza Virginia BARHAM (daughter of Col. John Barham who established CoffeeLanding on the Tennessee River) on December 28, 1882 in Rusk County, Texas. Was a Mason in the Blue Lodge, Chapter and Council. (src.
